Canyon takes the bag out of the bottle for pharmaceutical companies

10 June 2010

A new version of the T95 trigger sprayer, suitable for use with sterile cleaning liquids, has been developed by Canyon Europe.

Sterile cleaning products, used in clean rooms and hospital environments, have until now required an expensive, specially made bottle incorporating an inner bag.

The traditional difficulty with conventional sprayers has been that the high levels of gamma radiation, used to sterilise the standard bottle and contents, has degraded the polymers in the sprayer and affected efficiency.

An additional problem has been that bacteria laden air cannot be allowed to flow freely into the bottle and contaminate the sterilised contents. Simply blocking the vent hole is no solution because a vacuum is caused by the volume of liquid not being replaced by air. This leads to the collapse of the sides of the traditional bottle.

Now a new sprayer with a venting membrane has been developed by Canyon Europe which allows conventional low-cost bottles to be used.

Neil Ryan, Product Development Manager at Canyon comments:”The membrane acts as a filter and its microscopic holes allow air molecules to pass through, while preventing the entry of bacteria.  This innovative new system successfully prevents bottle collapse but keeps the liquid sterile.”

Another advantage of the venting membrane is its capability to let gas pass through it. Some liquids release a gas when exposed to gamma radiation. The gas causes a bottle with a non-vent sprayer to swell resulting in leakage of the liquid. The venting membrane eradicates this problem.

Canyon’s T95 membrane vented sprayer allows chemical companies to use normal bottles for liquids which need to be sterilised. This substantially reduces packaging costs and helps the medical and pharmaceutical industries maintain high standards of hygiene with a more affordable range of cleaning products.
